Paul Masi, AIA

Bates Masi + Architects

Paul Masi received a Bachelor of Architecture from Catholic University and a Masters of Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. He worked at Richard Meier & Partners before joining Harry Bates to form Bates Masi + Architects in 1998. Together the firm has been honored with 220 design awards since 2003 including three Cooper-Hewitt Design Award Nominations. Residential Architect Magazine selected Bates Masi as one of their 50 Architects We Loveand Architectural Record has awarded 3 Record Houses. In 2013, Bates Masi was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame and in 2017, Paul Masi was inducted into the Wm. S. Marvin Hall of Fame. He has lectured at universities throughout the country and has served as a juror for national, international, and AIA design award competitions. Bates Masi has been featured in national and international publications including The New York Times, New York Magazine, Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Interior Design, Metropolitan Home, Dwell, Elle Décor, and Remodeling. The firm’s first monograph Bespoke Home, with introduction by Paul Goldberger, is available in bookstores now. The firm’s highly anticipated second monograph will be available in 2023.

Anne Fougeron, FAIA

FOUGERON ARCHITECTURE

Over three decades of distinguished practice, Anne Fougeron has remained clear: architecture can change lives—both over time and in the moment—and every individual from every background deserves access to design’s transformative potential. Since founding her eponymous firm in 1986, she has demonstrated this principle time and again, establishing a model of practice dedicated to making the dignity and inspiration of good design available to all.

At the heart of this activist mission is Anne’s belief that great architecture can, and should be, part of the political world—and that principles of design are inextricably rooted in the principles of democracy. A building that is vivid and full of life communicates respect for all individuals within a community; an environment that is harmonious and reassuring to everyone within reinforces the value of social equality.

Working across an array of building types and budgets, Anne has advanced a humane modernism, an architecture that embraces society’s fundamental responsibilities in the language of today. She crafts enriching environments that uplift the spirit, awaken the senses, and benefit the human endeavors they were designed for— be it work, learning, wellness, or family life. Her approach confronts conventions within the field to argue for design strategies that support the breadth of their inhabitants’ needs, and by example, her work challenges our profession to uphold this responsibility.

Matthew Hufft, AIA, WELL AP, LEED GREEN ASSOCIATE

Hufft

Matthew Hufft is the founder Hufft, a full-service architecture, interior design and fabrication studio. An architect by trade and entrepreneur by nature, he identified strongly with his creative talents at an early age; on a cassette tape for a second-grade project, he declared his chosen career would be as an architect.

Matthew holds two degrees in architecture from The University of Kansas and Columbia University. After graduating from Kansas in 2000, he won the prestigious SOM Traveling Fellowship Award. At 22, he received his first commission – a residence for his parents nicknamed the Line House. Other commissions came as a direct result, and thus, the beginning of Hufft.

Hufft is a team of 40 architects, designers, craftspeople and artists, based in Kansas City, Mo., and Bentonville, Ark. The firm has completed over 650 projects, spanning from corporate headquarters, mixed-use developments and hospitality projects, to single-family residences. The firm has won more than 60 AIA awards and been published in 100+ national and international periodicals.

A husband and father of three, Matthew sees the great importance of design’s impact on our built environment. His keen interest for creating joy in the human experience is all the fuel he needs.
