The house’s concept diagram is concise, and the internal courtyard is effective. The half sunken patio is a nice space and is resolved well. The design effectively utilizes every space on the lot.

Even on a very public site the design achieves spaces that appear comfortable and protected. The jury appreciates the position and logic to the design’s organization. The cantilevered roof seems to float and create complete transparency and frames the ocean view.

The use of materials to make that space has merit, and functions as a discrete series of interventions that comes together as a whole. The design is not gimmicky or trendy, but instead subdued and conscientious. The jury appreciates the elevation and re-use of a mundane tilt-up building. The daylighting strategies and environmental achievements are commendable.

This excellent adaptive re-use project deftly up-cycled a degraded concrete tilt-up office building. In the process, the designers incorporated extensive daylight, reduced embodied carbon, and implemented water reclamation for both grey water and storm water. The on-site solar array ensured net positive operations, generating more electricity than the project uses. A great example of a truly sustainable workplace that enhances occupant well-being.

Overall, the project achieves a good balance of environmental performance, equity, and occupant health. The purpose of the project to house formerly homeless veterans is very moving.

Achieving Gold certification in LEED for Homes, this is an exemplary sustainability project in nearly all dimensions, with equal focus on building performance, equity, and occupant health. Units are equipped with all electric appliances, a substantial Indoor Air Quality benefit for occupants. 1/3 of parking spaces are equipped with charging for electric vehicles, a commendably high ratio for Affordable Housing. The project has access to a range of transit amenities, while communal gardens provide open space and opportunity for social engagement. The project creates an inspiring neighborhood hub for community growth, cultural celebration, and sustainable living.
