Over a 45-year career at AC Martin, Bob led the firm’s Education Planning and Design Studio, designing innovative, award-winning educational facilities across California, including major projects at USC and CSU campuses.

Michael Bohn, AIA

Partner, Studio One Eleven · Past President, AIA LB/SB

A licensed architect with over 30 years of experience, Michael focuses on repairing communities through architecture, landscape, and urban design — from the visioning of 200 blocks of downtown Long Beach to street-scale interventions across a dozen cities.

Cultural Historian, Memoirist, and Translator

Author of Holy Land: A Suburban Memoir and Becoming Los Angeles, Waldie frames his suburban experience as a search for a sense of place, writing widely on suburbanization and its cultural effects in Southern California and the nation.

Common Application for Design Excellence from the AIA COTE Top Ten Toolkit

The Common Application is based on the AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence which seeks to inform progress toward a zero-carbon, equitable, resilient, and healthy built environment. These are to be thoughtfully considered by designer and client at the initiation of every project and incorporated into the work as appropriate to the project scope. The Framework is intended to be accessible and relevant for every architect, every client, and every project, regardless of size, typology, or aspiration.

Completion of the Common App is only required for those projects submitting for COTE Award recognition in the AIA Long Beach / South Bay Design Awards program. Learn more about the AIA LBSB 2025 Design Awards program.

Jury comments:

The architects created a dynamic, welcoming entry by introducing a bold stair assembly that connected the site and building. The site planning was sensitive to the adjacent amenities while the architecture responded to the complex program with confidence and vibrancy.

Southern California Edison comments:

This LEED Gold project is very resource conscious, featuring a park irrigated with captured rainwater & gray water and energy usage 25% better than Title 24 Energy Code. Significant attention was paid to equity and enhanced accessibility, with one of the most prominent features of the project being a Grand stair which encourages activity and gathering.
